Experimental Artist, synesthetic research Karen Kunkel works in a process-oriented way, driven by the impulse to explore states, structures, and flows. These may unfold both inwardly and outwardly, with the artist moving fluidly between the poles of rational, deliberate inquiry on the one side, and the irrational, emotion, intuition, and chance on the other. Along this path, she draws on a wide spectrum of artistic means, including the presence of her own body. For her, the process itself—and increasingly the possibility of making it tangible for others—has become essential. To dwell within synaesthetic perceptions matters more to her than fixed material outcomes, which emerge almost of their own accord along the way. Likewise, Kunkel’s performance art extends an invitation to experience both the fleetingness and the boundlessness of the moment.
